The practice of composting not only decreases the amount of waste generation but also helps in preserving soil and preventing air pollution.
This is now you know and today we have with a step by step guide to turn your kitchen waste into compost.
1. Segregate your kitchen waste. Start putting edible waste such as vegetable peels, fruits peels, wasted cooked food in a separate container.
2. Collecting dry waste such as dried leaves and sawdust are also a important, so collect them in a separate small container.
3. Take a compost bin which could be a plastic bucket or an earthen pot. Do not forget to make 4-5 holes in the container at different levels as air outlets.
4. Start with lining the bottom with a layer of soil.
5. This is the important step. You need to make alternate layers of wet and dry waste that has been collected in the compost bin. One layer of edible waste, then other layer of dried waste and so on! Simple!
6. To retain heat and moisture, cover the container with a plank of wood or a plastic sheet.
7. Every few days, make a quick turn in the pile to provide proper aeration. Small If you find the pile too dry, sprinkle some water to maintain the moisture.
8. Within a span of 2 - 3 months, your waste will start turning into a dry, brown and crumbly compost which smells of earth.
