Even your heart beats would have gone up while giving a maths exam. Isn't it? Your palm sweat, you get butterfly in your stomach and you can't concentrate.
You are not alone in this world to go through that feeling about 20% of the population suffers from it and this phenomenon is called as maths anxiety. But what is it about mathematics that makes people feel anxious? Does this simply mean that you are bad at it or is it something else…
This is Now You Know and in today's video we will tell you that what is it about numbers and mathematics that makes people anxious.
People think that they are anxious about maths just because they are bad at it but the thing is other way round. They are doing bad in maths just because they are anxious about it.
This is because anxiety decrease cognitive resource called the working memory. This is something that helps you organise information you need to do complete a task.
Thinking too much about the problem eats up the working memory. And when this happens people can struggle with basic maths which they are master at. Stress, Self-doubt and insecurity can also harm your ability to solve maths problems.
The problem begins the way children's are introduced to maths by their teachers and parents. They have always shown the challenging aspect and this creates a fear in the child's mind.
Pressure to solve problems quickly boosts the pressure more. And being good at maths is considered as extra ordinary intelligence by all.
The only way to solve this anxiety is to try relaxation techniques. Short breathing exercise has improved test performance in students, writing your problems can also help because it helps with re- evaluating your performance.
So, do you also have maths anxxity?
